BOOK OF 100 - STATEMENT OF INTENT

Focus of work - Bars and Pubs

Form of research - I need to collect specific information for 10 bars/pubs, 5 old and 5 new. They need to be in the Leeds area and interesting. I plan to collect lists based on 10 subcategories. I will print the lists and fill them in when I visit the bars/pubs. I will photodocument specific objects and places and I will sketch maps of the layouts alongside interviewing.

Organizing and categorizing the information I collect may not take the form of lists. I need to research further to see if other methods are more appropriate. I will experiment and research mapping, diagrams and organizing in books, for example, Data Flow. Other research sources include magazines, such as Grafik, and looking at fellow designers work for inspiration.

Audience and context - 18 plus because the content will be slightly controversial. It would be available in bookshops, for instance, Waterstones or specialist bookstores such as Magma. It may also be available in bars and pubs. These places will be documented.

Title - Still under consideration, it depends on the form of the book or books.

Type - I need to find suitable legible typesets for the main copy to make it clear and interesting and have them questioned for suitability. For the main title and subtitles I will create an appropriate typeset.

Relationship between:
Format - A2 or smaller is the only rule so far. I need to gather more research before I decide.
Content - Still considering.
Layout - Needs researching.
Interaction - Needs development.

Style - Old and New.

Form of book - I have already developed a list of concepts which need prototypes making and reviewing. One book I have looked at is Paperworks, it is full of ideas for working with paper.

Function/purpose - To inform people in an interesting way about bars and pubs in Leeds.

Sequence - Still to be considered.

Colour - For new bars/pubs I will use colours that are bright and clean. For old dark and grubby colours. I need to research colour samples and have them reviewed.

Inspiration - Needs more development.

Binding methods -Needs research.

Materials - Needs research.

Stock (environmentally friendly) - I need to contact the merchant to see what stock is available and the cost. I also need to have the sample paper questioned by the audience to see if it is appropriate before purchase. I ‘ll experiment with books made with a variety of stock and ones with one variety. Below is one supplier and a book I researched in the Vernon Street library:

3:

Digital Print - For printing. Need to research Pantone.
Book binding - Binding methods. Need to experiment and ask the print room.
Screen printing
Letterpress
Mono print
Mixed media
Stamping
Rubbing
Montage
Collage
Painting
Wood and metal work
Paper craft
Photography - Gathering images for Photoshop work, inspiration for drawings and documentary evidence.

4:
Analysis and Evaluation - I am always self-critical in my notebooks but I will also make prototypes for review.

I will make prototypes and have the following reviewed -
Format and Form.
Layout and Sequence.
Binding method.
Colour.
Content.

I will make sample swatches and questionnaires to be reviewed for the following -
Titles.
Type.
Illustrations.
Photographs and photoshop work.
Colour.
Print quality.
Stock.
Binding Method.
Maps.
Diagrams.
Keys.
Packaging.
Copy.
The book.

I will be evaluating against -
Is the content appropriate?
Too Light or Dark?
Is the texture correct?
Format too small or large?
Do the layout, content and format work together?
Variety? and so forth.
