VISUAL LANGUAGE - LINE BRIEF - RAYOGRAPHS
Above is 'Cyanotypes' a piece of work by Christian Marclay.
Cyanotypes are unique photographic prints created by placing objects on a photosensitive surface. This early cameraless photographic process was developed in the1840s, and, much like a photogram, results in a silhouetted image varying in darkness based on the transparency of the object exposed to light. Commonly known as “blueprints” because of their distinctive Prussian blue color, this process was famously put to use by the 19th-century botanist Anna Atkins, and later used by architects and engineers as a method of reproducing drawings using only tracing paper and sunlight.
Continuing his exploration of the resonance between the visual and the sonic, Marclay’s cyanotypes capture the abstract tangles made by unspooled cassette tapes. Like party streamers, these lines of audiotape pulled loose from their plastic cassettes variously coil and twist, hang in catenary arches, or stretch across the surface of the prints. If the audio cassette has been rendered nearly obsolete by the evolution of technology, Marclay has reclaimed it as a tool for visual abstraction. Marclay has been called a “Dadaist DJ,” and these works recall early 20th-century avant-garde practices as well as Abstract Expressionist strategies for composition.
Marclay’s body of work – which spans video, sculpture, music, photography and collage – often examines various forms of the record, mining them for their technological contingencies and possibilities. In this new series, he exposes a sympathy between two outmoded kinds of recordings, the cyanotype and the cassette. These technologies intersect around ideas about sound and sight, reproduction and mediation, and an artistic practice of making, breaking, manipulating and keeping records.

BOOK OF 100 - STATEMENT OF INTENT
Focus of work - Bars and Pubs
Form of research - I need to collect specific information for 10 bars/pubs, 5 old and 5 new. They need to be in the Leeds area and interesting. I plan to collect lists based on 10 subcategories. I will print the lists and fill them in when I visit the bars/pubs. I will photodocument specific objects and places and I will sketch maps of the layouts alongside interviewing.
Organizing and categorizing the information I collect may not take the form of lists. I need to research further to see if other methods are more appropriate. I will experiment and research mapping, diagrams and organizing in books, for example, Data Flow. Other research sources include magazines, such as Grafik, and looking at fellow designers work for inspiration.
Link:
DATA FLOW
Audience and context - 18 plus because the content will be slightly controversial. It would be available in bookshops, for instance, Waterstones or specialist bookstores such as Magma. It may also be available in bars and pubs. These places will be documented.
Title - Still under consideration, it depends on the form of the book or books.
Type - I need to find suitable legible typesets for the main copy to make it clear and interesting and have them questioned for suitability. For the main title and subtitles I will create an appropriate typeset.
Relationship between:
Format - A2 or smaller is the only rule so far. I need to gather more research before I decide.
Content - Still considering.
Layout - Needs researching.
Interaction - Needs development.
Style - Old and New.
Form of book - I have already developed a list of concepts which need prototypes making and reviewing. One book I have looked at is Paperworks, it is full of ideas for working with paper.
Function/purpose - To inform people in an interesting way about bars and pubs in Leeds.
Sequence - Still to be considered.
Colour - For new bars/pubs I will use colours that are bright and clean. For old dark and grubby colours. I need to research colour samples and have them reviewed.
Inspiration - Needs more development.

WALK THE STREETS OF HAVANA
Binding methods -Needs research.
Materials - Needs research.
Stock (environmentally friendly) - I need to contact the merchant to see what stock is available and the cost. I also need to have the sample paper questioned by the audience to see if it is appropriate before purchase. I ‘ll experiment with books made with a variety of stock and ones with one variety. Below is one supplier and a book I researched in the Vernon Street library:

JMC PAPER
3:
Photoshop - Editing the photographs. Making new work.
Indesign - For the books layout. I need to develop my skills with this program.
Illustrator - To create the typeset for the main title and subtitles.
Drawing - Story boarding different illustrations and ideas I could use.
Digital Print - For printing. Need to research Pantone.
Book binding - Binding methods. Need to experiment and ask the print room.
Screen printing
Letterpress
Mono print
Mixed media
Stamping
Rubbing
Montage
Collage
Painting
Wood and metal work

4:
Analysis and Evaluation - I am always self-critical in my notebooks but I will also make prototypes for review.
I will make prototypes and have the following reviewed -

100 BRIEF
I began this brief by talking to a man from Skipton in Three Legs (a bar in Leeds), he recommended bars and pubs to see around Leeds which he described as ‘unbelievable’.
Gathering the research was pretty straight forward and no one seemed to care that I was taking pictures of them or taking rubbings and so forth. The conversation and unpredictable nature of the places was fascinating. I would like to tie that into the research and development work for the book. I found I didn't have enough time to do what I proposed partly because I found other lines of research I hadn't considered that were better. I would of liked to have spent more time drawing. I spent alot of time learning another camera. It was worth it and I now have cameras to suite different research needs.
